Columbus wins thriller in two overtimes

Jeff Davis | Riverton

The Titans visited Riverton last Tuesday in a game the Rams let get away a couple of times as the Titans hit a three pointer at the end of regulation and then another at the end of the first overtime after Riverton blew a five point lead with 40 seconds remaining to go to the second overtime. This was a tough loss but what an exciting game it was.
The game started with Riverton’s Bayley Lansford scoring inside and getting the first five points of the game as the Rams got jumped out to an 8 to 2 lead and the low scoring first quarter ended at 9 to 5.
Riverton was playing good defense in a fast moving game and freshman Carter Brown connected on a couple of long ones and the Rams appeared to be in control, taking a 24 to 11 lead into halftime.
Columbus came out to start the second half the more aggressive team and scored the first nine points and cut the Ram lead to 24 to 20. Riverton was not moving the ball to get inside the Titan zone, instead, misfiring on long range shots. After several Ram turnovers it was a two point game, but a long bank shot by Levi Zustiak at the buzzer gave the Rams a 30 to 25 advantage heading to the last quarter.
The Rams still had a 35 to 31 lead with 2:45 remaining and began slowing it down, taking time off the clock, which almost always backfires. Riverton missed a couple of free throws that could have put it away and it was 36 to 33 with 12 seconds left when the Titan’s Zep Speer hit a three to send to overtime.
Another Titan three pointer gave them their first lead, but the Rams came back to take a 44 to 39 advantage with 40 seconds remaining, but missed a couple of more charities followed by a Titan three and the Rams were clinging to a 1 point lead. Then Tyler Zustiak hit a couple with 7 seconds left, Speer hit yet another trey to send it to another overtime.
The Titans had a two point lead with 39 seconds left and the Rams missed a three, left with 15 seconds Titan freshman Patrick Cassidy made two free throws and that was that, but one heck of a game and the Titans made a great escape. Lansford led the Rams with 14 points followed by Matt Teel and Brown with 6.
