Baxter Springs, Kan. – Evert Francis Skaggs 93, of Baxter Springs, KS passed from this life on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Quaker Hill Skilled Nursing Facility.
Evert was born on November 5, 1920 in Ottawa County, OK to the union of Bert and Lena (Ball) Skaggs. After graduating from Quapaw High School, Evert was united in marriage to Barbara (McGregor) on May 17, 1947 in Baxter Springs, KS at the church parsonage.
Evert worked as a general laborer for B.F. Goodrich retiring in the early 1980’s. Evert was a part of the 1076 signal corps of the United States Air Force. He was a member of the Baxter Springs Lion’s Club, a lifetime member of the Baxter Springs Masonic Lodge #71, and volunteered for twenty years at the thrift store and Meals on Wheels. Evert and Barbara were Mr. and Mrs. Baxter in 1998. Evert was a member and elder of the First Christian Church in Baxter Springs. Evert enjoyed spending time with his family and being active in his church. He spent time woodworking and gardening. For those who knew Evert, he always loved to tell a good story.
Evert is preceded in death by his parents, one son, Jim Skaggs; three brothers, Floyd Skaggs, Joe Skaggs, and Bill Skaggs.
Evert is survived by his wife Barbara of the home; one son, Steve Skaggs and wife Pam of Joplin, MO; one daughter, Cathy (Skaggs) Bolek and husband Steve of Baxter Springs, KS; two grandsons, Chad Reed of Iola, KS, and Brett Skaggs of Los Angeles, CA.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 18, 2014 at the First Christian Church, Baxter Springs, KS. Pastor Ken Finley and Pastor Dan Haggard will officiate. Burial of ashes will take place at 1:00 p.m., Monday, May 19, 2014 at the Baxter Springs Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the First Christian Church building fund.
