Student Council honored the Fall Outstanding Alumni and Teacher of the Semester prior to the Galena-Coffeyville football game on Friday evening. The Outstanding Alumni being honored was Mrs. Penny New. Mrs. New graduated from Galena High School in 1979. She taught 4th grade for 30 years in the Galena school district, retiring as a full time teacher at the end of the 2014-15 school year. Throughout the years, she served as the district math curriculum chair, the Liberty Employability target chair, and was an integral part of planning the Liberty Dr. Seuss Day, Living History, and Ellis Island reenactment programs each year. She has definitely been a positive influence on the students in the Galena school district.
The Outstanding Teacher being honored was Mrs. Suzette Henderson. This is Mrs. Henderson’s third year teaching in the Galena School District and her fourth year teaching overall. She taught 3rd grade in Joplin for one year before coming to Galena to teach. Mrs. Henderson started out in the district teaching Kindergarten for one year before moving up to teach 4th grade at Liberty Elementary for the past two years. She also teaches in the After School Program, as well as Summer School, and is helping to organize this year’s election and Dr. Seuss Day.
The presentation was made by Student Council officers: President Taylor Price, Vice President Nikki Brownlee, Secretary Taylor Smith, and Utility Officer Abby Qualls. This is the 12th year that Student Council has presented the Alumni & Teacher of the Semester awards. Nominations are taken by students, faculty, & community members. Winners are then chosen by a Student Council vote. If you would like to nominate a teacher or alumni, please email the name, as well as the reason you are nominating the person, to news@galena499.org.
